L’Eglise Saint-Nicolas se trouve m\u00eal\u00e9e de tr\u00e8s pr\u00e8s \u00e0 l’histoire mouvement\u00e9e de la ville d’Enghien. Comme elle, ses origines exactes sont peu connues : un oratoire d\u00e9pendant de l’\u00e9v\u00each\u00e9 de Cambrai qui, vers 1150 passe \u00e0 l’abbaye de Saint-Denis-en\u00ad Broqueroie et qui se fait d\u00e9pouiller par les turbulents sires d’Enghien. Ceux-ci n’en contribueront pas moins \u00e0 le remplacer par un nouvel \u00e9difice o\u00f9 ils se feront grandiosement ensevelir (1310). Le ma\u00eetre-autel en est consacr\u00e9 en 1347 ; il l’est, \u00e0 nouveau en 1442, apr\u00e8s un incendie.<\/span><\/p>

Le d\u00e9veloppement \u00e9conomique de la ville, d\u00fb principalement \u00e0 l’essor de certains m\u00e9tiers (tapissiers et drapiers) permet \u00e0 l’\u00e9glise de s’agrandir et de s’embellir consid\u00e9rablement : nefs lat\u00e9rales et porche, orgues et jub\u00e9, verri\u00e8res armori\u00e9es et mausol\u00e9es de marbre, etc. H\u00e9las ! le gigantesque incendie de 1497 –plus de 400 immeubles sont an\u00e9antis !-\u00a0lui est tr\u00e8s pr\u00e9judiciable et tout autant, en 1566, le p\u00e9nible passage des iconoclastes.<\/span><\/p>

En 1960, le clocher se l\u00e9zarde. \u00a0Il faut le d\u00e9monter. On en profite pour restaurer tout l’\u00e9difice et lui restituer sa simplicit\u00e9 primitive (1964).<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
